REVIEW: 2020 Ski-Doo Summit X w/ Expert Package

Expertly packaged and engineered for banishing rider fatigue
2020 Ski-Doo Summit X with Expert Package
The Expert is not just a catchy name; this sled means business!
A first-rate ride for the backcountry, the Expert Package on the 2020 Ski-Doo Summit X takes the mountain sled to new heights. Created with extensive rider feedback, the Expert is the antidote for many of the ailments found in the mountain sled category.

Stable ski spindle and stopper
One of the refinements that orchestrates big rider benefits is the revised ski spindle and ski stopper. This adjustment gives the rider a more predictable ride and added confidence when experiencing conditions that are less than ideal. It does this by keeping the ski flat and the ski tips down when traversing gaps. We noticed a significant change in handling when sidehilling through cruddy snow, or through bumpy rutted out ascents.

Everything about the Expert Package, from the handlebars to the running boards, is nearly perfect. We challenge anyone to find something they don’t like about it!
■ Trimmed tunnel
Another change is a shortened tunnel. This allows for the easy evacuation of snow. By essentially taking the 154 tunnel and applying it to a 165 model the rider no longer fights the tunnel dragging the snow on deep powder days or on steep climbs. Just a word of caution to the rider: there is no longer a wheelie bar to keep you from going over backwards, just ask test rider Lonnie Thompson. While there is a snow flap available for the end of the tunnel we are not sure it is necessary as the sled temperature stayed down in warm and cold conditions. It helps that you can keep the ice scratchers down as they are now reverse compatible.

■ Renovated runners
The full-length extruded aluminum grid-style running boards allow for better foot-forward position too, giving better weight geometry and greater control to the rider. The way the running boards are cut, snow buildup is virtually nonexistent, and there is plenty of room and grip without being heavy to allow the rider to quickly jump from one side to the other.

■ Limiter strap
The new rear suspension tMotion limiter strap aims to modify the suspension allowing the rider to choose between a more grounded front end or a more playful one. While limiter straps in the past were usually ignored due to the inconvenience of adjusting, the tMotion adjuster gives riders two options for tailoring the ride without having to crawl under the sled.

■ Enriched ergos and smoother shocks
The Expert Package includes additional ergonomic tweaks that make the sled easier and more comfortable to ride. Some of these include lower seat height, smaller diameter handlebars, and a lower and softer handlebar strap that isn’t continually bumping your face. Additionally, the handguards are flexible, allowing for easy adjustment without breaking.

These shocks take on the trail and mountain experience with the comfort we expect from Ski-Doo.
We also like the narrower seat, a great improvement for shorter riders without sacrificing anything for tall ones.

Developed by mountain-riding expert Carl Kuster, the FORTY7C is narrow and light and the geometry allows riders to initiate moves more freely.

The shocks also have been upgraded with a Kashima coating that gives the Expert one of the plushest rides with buttery piston movement. These shocks help riders take on the trail and mountain experience with the comfort we expect from Ski-Doo.

■ Rider efficiency
It also should be noted that the things we loved about the Summit remain, like the proven and reliable Rotax 850 E-TEC engine, the SHOT starting system and the REV Gen4 platform. Before the improvements, Ski-Doo already had one of the most compliant mountain sleds. Couple that with this year’s revamps and efficiency is the winner, not just an efficient motor, but an energy savings for the rider.

With this machine you can have fun and still have energy left at the end of the day. And, with the machine doing much of the work for you, the Expert Package proves you don’t have to be an expert to ride like one.
