CHEBOYGAN, MICHIGAN
Situated on Lake Huron at the snowy top of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, this region is a prime snowmobiling venue. The North Central State Trail passes through the city of Cheboygan (which welcomes snowmobilers), allowing easy hops northwest to Mackinaw City (16 miles) or south to Indian River (17 miles) and Gaylord (28 miles). The southbound highlight is the scenic Mullett Lake segment, which was opened to snowmobiles in 2007 after a successful 10-year legal battle. Another major route, the North Eastern State Trail, runs southeast to Alpena (70 miles). Also nearby is the 80-mile Black Lake Trail in the vast Black Mountain Recreation Area.

ONEIDA COUNTY, NEW YORK
When you look at a map showing the network of snowmobile trails that blanket upstate New York, Oneida County is right dab in the middle of it – and that’s a good thing. Being southeast and downwind of Lake Ontario also is a plus when lake effect snow comes this way. The saying that “all roads lead to Rome” is apt here, since the centrally located city of Rome has snowmobile routes emanating in all directions. The county boasts more than 560 miles of trails over undulating terrain that takes riders through farm fields and forests alike, as well as into four adjacent counties where the riding is just as good.
Trail Towns: Booneville, Rome, Lee Center, Barneveld, Sherrill
Highlights: Oneida Lake, Delta Lake, Erie Canal
