Winter made a big return to the Midwest last year and it couldn’t have been more obvious than in our neighbor city of Milwaukee, Wis. Here’s a glimpse at our incredible winter.
The National Weather Service reported on March 22, 2008 the season accumulation at General Mitchell International Airport was 96 inches, just under the record of 109.8 inches set in 1886. Below is a breakdown of the snowiest winters in our area based on total snowfall.
1.) 1885-1886: 109.8 in.
2.) 2007-2008: 96 in.
3.) 1897-1898: 94.2 in.
4.) 1959-1960: 93.3 in.
5.) 1973-1974: 83.2 in.
AHHH SNOW! - Midwest riders hope for a repeat of last year's snowy winter.
Madison, Wis., was a big snow-winner last year too, setting a new seasonal record of 101.4 inches, smashing the previous record of 76.1 inches.
Lower Michigan saw plenty of snow too. The kids at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo saw 94.6 inches for the season, just shy of the 100-in. record.
Out East there was plenty of powder in places like Caribou, Maine, which got 197.8 inches of snow, demolishing the previous record of 181.1 inches.
Not to be out-done, the Western states boasted huge mountain snowpacks from Washington to Colorado. Crested Butte, Colo., broke its previous snowfall record of 415 inches with an astounding 418 inches!
That’s almost 35 feet of snow!
