At the beginning of this season, we were introduced to a pretty cool product. It isn’t technically a snowmobile, although it does have a rubber track that gets you where you need to go, whether you’re traveling over snow, ice, swamp, field or forest.
You might think of the SnowDog as a lawn mower or snow blower with a track. Simplicity is its claim to fame. It consists of a frame, Briggs & Stratton engine, transmission, suspension, track, handlebar and sled. The operator stands or sits (the seat is an optional add-on) in the sled as it’s towed behind the vehicle.
Like a lawn mower, the SnowDog is small enough to fit in the back of an SUV or pickup truck. It’s available in two lengths: compact (49 in.) and standard (58 in.). The SnowDog is lightweight (242.5-258.5 lbs.), making it easy to maneuver over any type of terrain. Depending on which model you choose, it’ll haul anywhere from 300 to 600 lbs., so it’s a great tool to have if you’re going ice fishing, hauling firewood, etc.
Though the SnowDog’s top speed is only 18 mph, it does have a few advantages over a snowmobile: no registration required, less fuel consumption (less than ½ gallon per hour), and about 1/3 of the cost!
