Say 'so long' to hot dogs and 'hello' to a holiday-inspired lunch you'll gobble up

Who doesn’t like something hot on a day’s ride? That’s right, no one. Here are some tips!
Thanksgiving is coming up and you’re probably already daydreaming about eating your favorite dishes, a nice warm plate of savory meat, crispy green bean casserole, stuffing, a warm dinner roll, and mashed potatoes and gravy.

What if you could have all these foods when you’re out on your next ride? While cooking a Thanksgiving feast on the trail might be a major undertaking, it is not impossible to have a delicious warm meal on the trail or mountain.

Pipe cookers allow riders to use the warmth generated by their sled’s engine to heat food. These warmers are made of stainless steel with attachments to hook the container to the sled’s pipe. And, while you might be thinking it is too much work, it doesn’t have to be, and a warm meal will beat a cold peanut butter sandwich. Plus a little prep will help you create an appetizing change if you’re currently just using that pipe to heat hot dogs or frozen pizza pockets. Yet there doesn’t have to be a lot of extra prep to create a nice meal on the trail, it just requires getting out of your frankfurter mindset.

Leftovers are a great asset when pipe cooking. Plan to have leftovers when making your dinner the night before to ensure you’ll have something to pack. Or, if you eat out, a restaurant’s take-home box ingredients will taste great and are an easy way to fit in veggies and protein for added energy and performance while riding.

Many leftovers can be made into sandwiches, and when they are served warm on the trail they taste better than they ever did at home. A simple sandwich made of deli meat and cheese on a hamburger bun can be wrapped in foil and put in the warmer to provide a gooey melted cheese lunch that is much more satisfying than a cold sandwich.

Add your favorite dessert to the warmer as you are heading back to the truck, or after you eat lunch, for a delicious trailside treat. If you use oven bags, simply take out the one used for your meal and slip in a new dessert filled bag. Some good trailside desserts include crisps and crumbles or cinnamon rolls.

snowmobile Thanksgiving pipe warmer sandwich

1 large bun or roll, sliced in half
2 tablespoons butter
2-4 slices carving board-style turkey breast lunchmeat
1/4 cup instant mashed potatoes, prepared as directed on package
2-4 slices of your favorite cheese
1 slice of jellied cranberry sauce

  1. Gather ingredients and smear each slice of bread with butter
  2. Layer one side of the sandwich with lunchmeat, cheese, mashed potatoes, then a bit more cheese.
  3. Top the sandwich with a slice of jellied cranberry sauce
  4. Cover the sandwich with the other slice of bread
  5. Wrap the sandwich tightly in tinfoil (wrapping it tightly will help the sandwich stay together)
  6. Place the sandwich in the muffler warmer
  7. Ride your snowmobile
  8. Remove and eat the sandwich once heated through and the cheese is melted
NOTE: If you prepare these sandwiches, have two of your friends who are riding with you heat up canned sweet potatoes and boxed stuffing using oven bags in their pipe warmers for a complete Thanksgiving feast. The meal can be topped with store-bought pumpkin cookies or apple pie for dessert.

  • A pipe cooker can’t thoroughly cook raw meats to a safe internal temperature and cooking raw meats can produce grease under your sled’s hood. It’s a great idea to use cooked meats and vegetables as they just need reheating. 
  • Keep in mind that soups, stews, and other liquids will most likely spill and make a mess under your hood, so pick thicker foods.
  • Oven bags are useful as they do not melt, they help prevent food from burning and provide easy cleanup. No more scrubbing after a hard days ride, just discard the used oven bag and start over with a new bag.
  • The cooking time for your food will vary depending on how hard you ride, the type of sled you are on, and the placement of the warmer. So it’s a good idea to check on your food once in a while to ensure you’re not burning it until you know the temperature your machine produces. Wait until later in the ride if you know you will be riding hard that day.
  • This sounds like a no-brainer, but remember to use gloves to remove the cooker from the machine to avoid burns. You can let it cool in the snow a bit before touching it with your bare hands.
