Tony-

You were extremely fortunate to have what you have. There is no doubt. But there is no way in todays market, that ANY company can survive providing that cost.

You blame management. Well, you are dead wrong. Thats a ruse used by Unions forever, to disguise the real reasons of what kills a business.

These legacy costs are yet another reason there are no jobs here.  Look at what GM pays you right now.  WHAT do you produce right now. Zero, zip nada.  Now multiply that times the retirees. They paid you the highest wages while you were working, and now that you are NOT working, they are still paying huge numbers. They simply can not afford to meet the commitments they made in the past, and continue  to do so.  All the Hyundai, Yugos,et al, have ZERO legacy. They have a clean slate.   Thats a huge reason we cant be competitive.  THAT IS WHY THEY GO OFFSHORE so much.

Now before you go  completely off the wall, you need to remember how the UAW was in the 50's, fresh from WWII and Korean War. They had such a BOOM , they needed to entice people to come to work for them. Before WWII, there was no such thing as retirement, vacation, health insurance. Just like Korea, China, etal today. THEY are the AMERICA of the 50's business wise.   Today, we dont need to entice people to come to work fro outrageous money. You can offer $25/hour & health insurance, and the doors will be busted down. Thats OUR ECONOMY today.

You use Eastman as an example. Perfect. Use a company thats been eliminated by technology. Who uses film today? Nobody.  Who uses a film type camera? Nobody. So just how does this company survive this technoboom?  Stay on the cutting edge, right? Eastman holds MANY patents that were stolen by Japanese and Chinese companies for these digital cameras. A US patent does not mean  on foriegn soil. NO protection. All thats is down the toilet. They find the patent, copy anything worthy, and produce it by someone making $2.00.  HOW IS THAT EASTMANS FAULT?   Our governemt has spent billions of dollars fighting anti-trust lawsuits, getting awards, with ZERO enforcement. My daughter worked in DC on Intellectual Properties as as an intern.  We're fighting a battle that we cant win.  And YOU said it yourself. They got huge annual bonus's. If they invested them, they would have a nice retirement. Instead, they probably have tons of toys to take its place.

Now, just so you know, if a company promises a benefit, I feel they better darn well provide it. Its against the law for them to touch retirement accounts. I steward my companies retirement program, and there are more damn forms and legal papers to file, that I care to talk about. AND I USE AN ACCOUNTANT!!

OK, enough of all that. I have a serious question to ask you.

Who are the largest Union employers?  Big Business, right?

Where is your retirement programs invested in? Trick question, it can only be Mid Cap and Large Cap corps, AKA Big Business.

The Dems are historically ANTI Big Business.

Unions traditionally support Democrats.

Why on Gods green earth would the rank & file support ANYONE that is trying to put their employer out of business, and where their retirement programs are invested??

I dont understand.

BTW, not trying to argue with you, just a civil conversation.

Re: SHOCK DOC.....EF HUTTON HERE!

Tony,

Your words are wasted on the far right. They will get theirs in the end, not the late forties righties of today because most are set for life  (yet they will live and are living to see it). There will always be some "far right" jump in with an example of some scenerio to prove their point(propaganda).

The fact remains that blue collar Union America has been wiped out by this idiocracy led by the clueless GWB. Unions all across America have been in negotiations with Companies and the outcome has already been slated by the Administration friendly Corporation. The current Administration has been bent on Union busting. The FLRA has been silent  under this administration. The corruption in fair labor relations has been rampant.

We have plenty of Kodak moment  type examples here in Syracuse. Carrier Corporation (out sourced to Mexico with huge quality assurance results), GM plant shut down on GM circle, New Process Gear (chrysler) MAGNA (new Canadian owner of New Process Gear) with major cuts in pay and layoffs. These are thousands 0f jobs removed from the local economy  in Syracuse replaced out of the area and usually out of the country. Many other Unionized Corporations have shut down.

Let's ignore politics for a moment and focus on todays Corporate culture. Recently a wise man said to me; there are two types of people. Those that can and do and those that teach. The unfortunate result of our current Corporate world is the result of hiring "fresh off the street and unexperienced" College educated (by those that can't) . Thus, outsource to China.

China is the answer to all new CEO's and many older ones that believe it to be true. This is what has and will to continue to ruin our counties economy.

   Meanwhile,

Re: SHOCK DOC.....EF HUTTON HERE!
I have been a union guy for 18 years, and even in my management position I am allowed to keep my card. ThyssenKrupp is German owned, and is basically a German version of UTC with the exception that ThyssenKrupp is very union friendly and UTC (Carrier, Otis Elevatory, Sikorsky, etc.) is not. ThyssenKrupp is very active in this country with (ThyssenKrupp Elevator, Trucking, warehousing, steel production, crane and ship building, and the list goes on). The elevator constructors union is very strong, our guys are very well trained, and they do a very dangerous job. I am fortunate to have gotten into this business when I did, and I feel for all of the manufacturing type unions that are going down with the ship. This country need drastic change and needs to take drastic measures, and it starts with import quotas, and laws governing US corporations ability to move operations out of the US, only to re-import the finished product. Until that happens, kiss most manufacturing jobs goodbye.

I will first say I have a Union pension, was a member from 1967 to 1990. Operating Engineers . I believe the automakers and the Unions are the reason that the wages and our lifestyles were at the top of any country in the world. I also believe that we ALL thought our wages would never change, the Union told me. The US only makes up 4% of the World, we have competition now from other Countries. I can tell you we have to help ourselves first, try and buy American made products when you can, and vote. The Goverment would definitely change if the elections had a 75% turn-out. I guess I will uncover my GM stock, that is underneath my Exxon Mobil stock certificates.

Re: SHOCK DOC.....EF HUTTON HERE!

Guy,

You are a smart man. I have great respect for you. You know that.

Tell me how any company can compete with an overhead that triples our domestic companies' competitors.

Legacy costs. Base wages that are HUGE. The benefit packages are huge. Great if you are fortunate enough to enjoy them, but THEY RAISE THE OVERHEAD beyond what the market will bear.

There CAN NOT be government intervention on Capitalism. Its against out Constitution!! As soon as we do, we have to revert to the last time we closed our borders.  Does 1928 ring a bell?  Thats what spurred the Market Crash. Obviously, there are saeguards in place now to prevent that, but still.

Like it or not, we entered a Global Economy 35 years ago, when Nixon started talks with China.

All the Walmart thinking has finally caught up with us.  No one wants to be responsible for this dilemma we are in. ITS OUR OWN DOING!    We, the buying public control what comes into our country, what gets bought, and what gets returned to the manufacter.

Look at GM . They recently announced new smaller gas efficient  cars coming. Hello??  America has requested that since the Japs sent the first Datsun over the pond.  Obviously, the country has little regard for domestic workers who make 2-3 times the average salary. They bought foriegn, leaving the domestic workers outside.

How can the government legistlate what we buy? Or are they supposed to limit our choices?

Re: SHOCK DOC.....EF HUTTON HERE!

The ONLY way the govenment can intercede without interfering would be a Proportion Tax. This concept has YET to be tabled by any congressman, as its my idea!

Say a product costs 100 dollars to manufacture.

If 30% comes from foriegn soil (including Mexico/Canada) there is a 30% tax levy

70%, 70% tax levy

100% domestic is tax free. The Gov can reap the benefits from the employee witholdings.

YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT THE UNIONS HAVE TAK,IN IN THE REAR END IN CONCESSIONS TO GM, FORD, CHRYSLER !! I HAVE TO HAND IT TO YOU DOC YOUR EXTREMELY SMART, BUT YOUR ALSO WRONG. MY PLANT FOR EXAMPLE GAVE US A CONTRACT IN 2000 THAT WAS GREAT, 6 MONTHS LATER THEY FILED CHAPTER 11. BANKRUPTCY. BECAUSE THEY COULD NOT HOLD THEIR END OF THE CONTRACT THAT I MIGHT ADD THEY BEGED OUR UNION TO SIGN. THE OLD CHAPTER 11 TRICK, BUT THATS OK THAT COMPANIES PULL THAT FAST ONE. 3:16 (yammie '' big '' tony)

Re: SHOCK DOC.....EF HUTTON HERE!

I have a customer who was a consultant to the automotive industry and he chukles when he tells me that the saying used to be at GM ...100% of the time 50% of the people are doing nothing.I can empathasize with both sides of the equation but Shockdoc brings up a lot of great points about running a business. You simply cannot compete in a global market with costs that exceed your competitors. We all want a high standard of living but there are a lot of people in the world that are happy with a fraction of what we have.In the end it is the absolute job of the management of a publically traded company to ensure profits and longevity of the company to the shareholders of the company...That is why they are in business because they borrow money and provide a return to the people who own the company.Once we realize this we can swallow the rest of the decisions a bit easier. The labor force is indeed a critical part of the quality and workmanship of a company and while necessary, many labor jobs are being replaced.Look at the automation to ensure 2 things, efficiency and quality.Robots don't go on strike, get hurt, call in sick or need pensions. The new GM plant in mexico has more people working on the grounds than in the factory.

Bonus question of the day............What percent of a Ford Mustang...the iconic legenday muscle car of America for 44 years is made in America??

This is a tender subject I hope everyone prospers but the main thing to teach your kids is to try to get a good education and take care of your own destiny as much as possible. The day they start a job, start saving for retirement. The days of 30years and out and a cushy pension are folklore at Thanksgiving Dinners now.We all are lied to everyday about the world and be smart enough to form your own opinions.

Good Night

Look out for 600's with mirrors!!

Re: SHOCK DOC.....EF HUTTON HERE!
the unions have done alot for workers over all these years, I dont care what anyone says.....working at a non union shop for 15+ years, what a differance now working for a union backed facility. I realize that unions are not as strong as they once were, but they have done alot of good for the workers that alot of people have forgotten about. Take all the pension type agreements, all the different holiday type items, regular annual raises even thought might be small....how about health benfits!.....no private business gives this stuff because your a nice guy!....Its a very competive world right now and the working man always could use a voice in the work place. It might not be alot, but its something, and its better than getting fired for voicing your opinion.....I'm a CSEA member and my father was a United Steelworker for over 40+ years.....they do some good, I dont care what anybody says

Re: SHOCK DOC.....EF HUTTON HERE!

OK Tony, this is my last post on this. I want to TRY to consolidate & condense this so you know exactly what I am saying.  Hopefully , you wont take it out of context like everything else, so far.  I am trying to EXPLAIN what is happening, not bashing. You know me. I call em like I see em. It may look like bashing, but I certainly would take the work/retirement package you have in a heartbeat. You had a great deal. Its just not there for todays workers.  The golden goose is dead in part, because of a global economy. No government , nor management could foresee it, nor can correct that.

1.) The Unions did a great job,THAT WAS NEEDED, up until the late 70's

2.) Early 70's , Japs introduced Datsuns, Hondas, etc. The US Public BOUGHT THEM. (Courtesy of Post War state of the art steel plants we built them)     (First was the first nail in domestic automakers coffin)

3.) I will repeat that IF A COMPANY MAKES A PROMISE, THEY BETTER DELIVER.

4.) My statement about what you do in retirement stands. You need to realize the hard facts. You, as a retiree, produce nothing right now.  A dead cost to the company, with no return. BEFORE YOU GET NUTS, I agree they owe it to you. See #3.    Doesnt change the fact as to how many retirees making , what 80% of their old salary?  These retirees are still a burden to the bottom line, whether its owed to them or not. Again, See #3. You are OWED that.

(Second nail in coffin, because the management failed to see a global economy coming, and basically had more faith in Americans to buy American built product. Had they known, they would have negotiated harder with the Unions.  We, as Americans, didnt buy domestic.)

5.) Chapter 11.  This is not as simple or as easy as you would like to think. You just dont throw a switch and Claim 11.   Doing so is DEADLY to a company, and done as a last resort.  To come out of Chapter 11 is actually quite a feat for a corporation.

a.) essentially kills any and all financing.

b.) Kills your Bond rating. I made good money of GM's bonds in the late 80's. They were

paying 11.5% because their rating was in the toilet.

c.) your cost of goods is higher, because the suppliers want more compensation for the risk,

when they sell to someone under protection, ALTHOUGH by law, a company can not be

delinquent on bills once they file! Once they go 7, they are done.

I doubt that GM would spend the money on negotiating, if they had any inkling of filing Chapter 11. Doesnt make sense.  MAYBE they were making a hail mary attempt, and economic conditions killed the attempt? Dont know. Your Union wouldnt know either.  Thats all Corporate files with no access. The Unions only get to see what the Company WANTS them to see. Either way, GM would not file 11 JUST to get out of a labor contract, despite what your BA says.

If GM is to survive in todays market, they need to take their lumps on prior commitments, but drastically cut wages and benefits for new hires, to match their competitors.

Remember, the Benefits were only introduced to get people to work there in the first place. It was dangerous hard work. OSHA and the Unions changed those conditions.

OK, now that you can see I am NOT AGAINST you, and telling it like it is... I am going to tease you a bit. How much of that Yamaha is domestic?  LOL  Look at the Cat and Polaris workers you are spitting on!!!
