WHEN AND WHAT SNOWMOBILE WAS YOUR FIRST RIDE?
|
|
|
|
When did you ride your first sled and what was it? I just thought I would have some fun here, and ask. I personally rode my first sled in 1969 and was a arctic cat panther. Then owned Ski-Doo's for 20 years until I rode a Polaris and never looked back. Polaris to me is the best quality wise, dependabilty wise and ergonomically they fit me best. They all are good sleds today, but just curious on your take?

Year was '67 and the sled was a new skidoo. Dad rented it for the weekend and took it to hunting camp. My brother broke windshield in barb-wire fence within 5 minutes. We took turns "racing" around the camp (timing ourselves) and I rolled it over a 5 foot bank which broke the hood and the spark plug (which was in your lap and exposed anyway). I can still hear my dad say in a not-so-sure-what-this-is-gonna-cost-me-voice "I have to return this thing". Next year he bought a '68 Polaris Mustang (with muffler by-pass). Was supposed to add 5 mph to top speed - sure made a lot more noise.

First sled owned was a used 74 Ski-doo 400 FA Blew it up twice during the first week. Following week bought a newly leftover 74 Arctic Cat 400 El Tigre....another interesting sled except a bit more reliable. Didn't become a Polaris guy till at least 10 years later.

Had to be around 1965 on a Snow Prince, I think. First sled I owned was a 1977 Polaris Colt SS340, at the time my father had a 1977 Colt SS250. I've had 22 sleds since then, all makes. Now have Skidoo 2006 Rev 800HO and Polaris 2008 IQ700. Most fun sled - my 1979 TX340!

Mid Air, Seems we always say that, my fun sled was a ???????, but when in reality, it is just fun in your memory. Because I'll bet if I gave you that 1979 TX for a day to ride you would say, give me my 08 Polaris! I find myself saying stuff like that myself, I had a 76 RV 340 and had a blast on it, then, but I rode one two years ago, and hated it! What a buckboard, and no fun to ride on a trail, well atleast a rough one. I'm not bashing you, but just making a statement I find we all say funny.

The first sled I rode was a 1980 Polaris TXC 340 free air. It was my mothers and my bro had my dads 1980 TX 440 free air. My first wrenching was when we swapped out motors and that now 440 TXC would beat my brothers 1994 440 sport. We also had 2 evinrude 440 skimmers as kids. The first sled I bought was a 1989 Indy 650, worked all summer trimming christmas trees. I learned how to wrench on that sled.

Agree, just like driving the old car you thought was the best thing you ever owned! Bad brakes, smelly exhaust and crappy radio. Give me my 07 F150 Lariat back!! I guess trying the old TX on the groomed trails of now-a-days maybe fun for while.......but the new stuff is for sure way superior.

I recently had a '78 TX440 that I just sold. I rode that sled last winter and you know what guys, it didnt ride as bad as I thought it would. In fact, the way that thing ripped down the groomed trails, I had a blast riding it. That was one of the best vintage sleds I ever own. Id like to buy another one, out to look for a nice TX-L 340 if I can find one someday. ![Lightning [li]](/SNO/CS/emoticons/emotion-60.gif) WL

The year was 1966. The place was my Landlords Farm. The Sled was a year old 65 Polaris Star with a 10 hp. JLO single that propelled Me to the hairbending top Speed of 25 mph. ( on a Downhill with a 15 mph. tailwind).
